The story tells of a tiny monster who wanders into a village and causes enormous trouble. The village, with its stream and forest and fields, is pitted against human greed, carefully stirred into the minds of the hapless villagers by the attention-seeking Wanting Monster.
Embedded in the story is the experience of an ecology both degraded by greed and then redeemed by the mutual realisation of our interdependence with it and with each other. As is the way in fairy tales, it takes a child to show the villagers the cause of their delusions and to open their eyes to the Wanting Monster – a loveable, rambunctious character, whose tantrums and manipulations are an expression of the great human drive for attention and love.
